When sheriff’s deputies arrived in response to a call about a worker who was shocked by a piece of machinery, they found a man with no pulse.

Larry Collins was running sanding equipment at the metal polishing company he owns with his brother in Holland Township, MI, when he was shocked by the machine.

A co-worker managed to push him away from the machine. Other workers started CPR.

But when the deputies arrived, Collins wasn’t breathing.

All Ottawa County, MI, sheriff’s cars have a portable automated external defibrillator (AED) in their trunks.

Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Brookhouse says within 30 seconds of using an AED on Collins, he started to move and breathe.

Collins was taken to a local hospital for additional treatment.

“It (the AED) saved this guy’s life,” said Brookhouse. “He’s the luckiest guy around.”

Yes, we have AEDs at all our facilities. Fortunately we have never had to use one!

  3. Craig Says:

Are there any legal or other concerns for having an defibrillator device in the workplace… i.e. training, liabilities, etc?

  4. Brady Says:

Craig, check with your legal department. The laws and good samaritan protection vary by state. We do have AEDs in our facilities.

  5. Lynn Corrall Says:

As previously stated it depends on the jurisdiction you are in concerning the use of AED’s. The American Heart Association and the Red Cross offer low cost training in CPR, AED and First Aid. I would recommend a class to anyone who is interested.

We have them in our facilities as well. Because they are almost entirely fool proof, by that I mean you cannot shock unlesss the AED reads a shockable rhythm. If you don’t have one at present, find out what is required and get one as soon as possible. You may need to use one within the next 10 minutes or hopefully never. Of course it is better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have it!

We have 40 plants with AEDs in each. They have worked for us on several occasions. Our approach is to train the personnel to use them. In regards to the legal system, we will handle it when the time comes - for the present we want them available.

  7. Sherye Elliott Says:

Most certainly, I work in a hospital. However, we had an incident in our mall a few years ago. A gentleman collapsed and needed help. If it hadn’t been for the luck of a nurse being there as a customer as well, he might not have made it.
This nurse shared her concern with the mall manager and expressed to him the need for an AED.
Don’t know if they have one or not.

  8. Mgaff Says:

Our company currently has 26 AED’s throughout various buildings. Because of the legal issue with not only AED’s but CPR varies and sometime hard to understand we use an outside vendor to conduct AED, Firstaid, CPR, and Blood Borne Pathogen training once a year. The vendor contacts the state medical office and notifies them of the AED’s serial numbers ect.. I think you get the point. Well worth the money, and gives our EH&S Department more time for other programs and training.
