Five online videos produced by the Ontario, Canada Workplace Safety and Insurance Board emphasize that “there really are no accidents.”

That’s the on-screen message at the end of each of the safety videos on YouTube. Warning: They’re disturbing.

Each short story addresses different safety topics in a variety of workplace settings:

  1. Restaurant: Slip-and-fall and burn hazards.
  2. Construction: Falls from heights and combustible materials.
  3. Factory: Forklift and storage safety.
  4. Retail: Ladder safety.
  5. Electricity: A dead worker speaks from a coffin.

  1. Bill Says:

I use videos for safety training a couple of times every month. I tend to shy away from “impact” videos for everything except PPE training. I don’t think it’s necessary to display gory injury images to get your point across for most safety issues, but I believe it does help in the case of PPE. Judging by the reactions I get from images of a nail in the eye or lacerated hand, I believe it does drive home the point of how important it is to wear PPE. I suppose it will work for any other safety issues as well, but when you use it selectively it makes a bigger impact when you do. PPE is my pet issue, so that’s where I use it. It’s like the guy who swears all the time; no one pays any attention to him, but when the guy who seldom swears uses a four-letter word, everybody notices.
