From our Bizarre Accidents file: A man operating a crane was killed instantly when he was struck in the head by a flying bolt.
Allan Peacock was operating the crane in the yard of McCurdy Engineering in New Plymouth, New Zealand, when a strap carrying a load broke.
The broken strap was flung backwards, and a D-link bolt hit Peacock in the head.
Paramedics’ attempts to resuscitate the worker were unsuccessful.
He was moving a load of heavy gas cylinders in pouring rain, according to the Taranaki Daily News. Peacock was an employee of another company, Roebuck Cranes.
This industrial crane didn’t have a cab. It’s operated by someone standing beside it on the ground.
Local police and the New Zealand Department of Labour are investigating.
