OSHA is investigating the death of a crane operator who was killed when a 6,000-pound steel bar fell on him.

A medical examiner’s report says Benjamin Alcorn, 22, was crushed under a steel bar that hadn’t been securely attached to an overhead crane at Acme Galvanizing, Milwaukee. The bar was 10 to 15 feet in the air when it fell.

Crane operators are supposed to stand outside a designated area. The report says Alcorn did not.

Alcorn had worked as a crane operator at Acme for less than three months.

According to the Milwaukee Journal, records show previous OSHA citations for the company, including four violations last year and 10 in 2005. Acme paid just over $4,000 in fines for those incidents.

$4,000.00 is pretty cheap for a life!!!

  2. Miner Mike Says:

who ever put the bar up without securing it should be liable, not just the company

    This is appalling!!!!!

22 years old and now gone because of carelessness………….

pacuke and Miner Mike your right!!!!!

  4. Getreal Says:

paduke - the $4k fine was for prior violations, not the fatal injury. You can bet this one will draw big-time fines.
