When it comes to stairs, usually injuries occur because a worker falls on the steps. But in this bizarre and tragic turn of events, the steps fell on the worker, killing him.
A supervisor died at a resort construction site in the two-island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Leeward Islands when a flight of wooden steps being lifted to a building under construction fell and crushed him.
Elias Benjamin was working at the Silver Reef Resort project as the Site Supervisor with the construction company Fort Tyson Ltd.
He was injured while supervising the lifting of the stairs to the top floor of the building. The construction director at Silver Reef said the load slipped from its lifting straps and fell on top of Benjamin.
Emergency Medical Services responded but were unable to revive him.
Authorities are investigating. Silver Reef management maintains that the correct safety procedures, equipment and lifting plans were in place at the time of the incident.
