A new survey notes that 61% of North Americans haven’t had their hearing tested within the past five years.

Unitron, the company that commissioned the survey, has a new product that seeks to decrease that number.

uHear is a simple, self-administered hearing test with three assessments: hearing sensitivity, speech in noise and a questionnaire about common listening situations.

It’s available for download on iTunes for 99 cents, and people can use it on their iPhone or iPod touch.

Users can take the test on their own time, and re-measure themselves at key moments such as immediately after work or after a loud concert.

Unitron will donate proceeds of uHear to charities that support hearing loss awareness and education.
