For safety professionals in the mining industry, or for those with a creative bent looking for a new idea to help spread safety information, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) developed safety pocket cards.
MSHA designed these cards in a format that’s “easily printed, carried and shared” with Best Practice (BP) cards that provide do’s and don’ts for workers and Health Hazard (HH) cards with important information on ways to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses.
Some of the topics covered by these cards include:
- highway truck pre-op inspections
- trucker training checklists
- operating equipment near water
- machinery safety for contractors
- roof evaluations
- tire and rim safety
- heat stress
- asbestos hazards
- controlling dust, and
- hearing conservation.
While these cards are mostly MSHA and mine specific, some offer general recommendations that could be applied in most industries.
For creative safety professionals in industries outside of mining, these cards could provide inspiration to make your own cards that may be better suited to your industry or even tailored to a specific worksite.
