The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) introduced a new safety app for iPhone and Android devices on Aug. 31, 2022.
Miners can use the app to get timely information on safety and health practices and find resources to help them understand their rights and responsibilities under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act, according to a Department of Labor news release.
The app also sends users notifications about mining accidents and how to prevent them.
There are five main sections within the app, covering:
- safety
- health
- miners’ rights
- information about MSHA, and
- a “Contact us” section.
Miners can now search for info directly
Miners have typically had to get safety and health information from several sources, such as their unions, representatives, mine safety offices, managers, training programs, MSHA inspectors and industry stakeholder groups.
While all of those remain important avenues of communications, technology has made it easier for miners to research information directly. MSHA collaborated with mining stakeholders to make this app accessible for miners and developed it with certain design features in response to those stakeholders.
