Worker pulls nail from eye after incident

Advice from a paramedic: Don’t do what this worker did when a nail flew into his eye.
The 20-year-old tradesman was hammering in a nail at a construction site in Melbourne, Australia, when the nail flew into his eye. No word on whether he was wearing any eye or face protection.
He then pulled the 40 mm nail from his eye before paramedics could arrive.
The attending paramedic said the man had some blurred vision, but appeared to have escaped serious injury to his eye.
“If someone has something go into their eye like a nail, they are probably best to leave it in there to reduce further damage, allowing the object to be removed [at a] hospital,” the paramedic advised.

Good advise but very painful. While teaching my daughter to cast a fishing rod. she accidently hooked my eye. The hook was embedded in my eye ball. Because I could still see out of the eye the emergency clinic I went to could not get a hospital in the area to accept me. After 6 hours of laying on a cot with this hook in my eye (they would not give me anything for pain because they did not want to interfear with the drugs they would give me to operate). They brought in a helecopter and flew me to U of M (teaching hospitals can not refuse to treat you)kelloge eye center. Almost 8 hours with a fish hook and steel leader attached to my eyeball. They told me had I allowed them to remove it or removed it myself I would have lost the vision in the eye. Everything worked out fine except for the pain and the fact my daughter has never gone fishing with me again. You can see a picture of my eye in the medical journals. I was the first person they had operated on that still had the full night crawler on the hook at the time of surgery.
