Authorities responding to a 9-1-1 call made a gruesome discovery at a Bumble Bee Foods seafood plant in California.
Police and fire personnel found a lifeless employee inside an industrial oven. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim, Jose Malena, 62, had worked at the plant in Santa Fe Springs, CA, for six years.
Cal-OSHA is investigating to find out how Malena ended up in the oven, known as a “steamer machine.” The state safety agency’s initial investigation indicate the worker “was fatally injured when he was cooked in an oven.” Cal-OSHA has up to six months to complete its full investigation which will determine if fines will be issued to Bumble Bee.
“The entire Bumble Bee Foods family is saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Malena family,” Bumble Bee Foods said in a statement.
