This is a great example of a company looking out for the health and safety of their employees while at the same time protecting the company from lost productivity and legal costs from injuries. Yes, there was a cost to implement the handling devices but productivity alone has a 2 year pay back. Then you add the payback from improved moral and savings from eliminating potential injuries and the payback is about 1 year or less. We have to orientate rolls stock of 2 tons for printing and in the process we had several employees with back strains in less than 3 years. We added a pneumatic roller to push the rolls then added an industrial size “lazy Susan” so the rolls could be easily spun to face the press. Since adding this $2000 of equipment improvements over the last 3 years we have had -0- injuries or back strain complaints in this area.
Note: We settled a “claimed back injury” (in another area) for over $100k so the legality costs are also a major driver when implementing equipment to reduce injuries. Back injuries can be an easy injury to embellish and true back injuries can have a lifetime impact on the employee. Take care of your back!
