OSHA has revised its guidance on servicing tires to address current hazards and help workers safely perform maintenance on large vehicles.
The revised charts address OSHA’s Materials Handling and Storage standard that protects workers who service single- and multi-piece rim wheels.
OSHA consulted with representatives from tire, rubber and wheel manufacturers before it updated the materials.
The updates are available in a portable manual or as three posters.
Some recent examples of incidents in which workers were seriously injured or killed while handling large vehicle tires:
- One worker was killed, four injured in this incident
- A tire explosion on a tractor trailer killed a worker
- A worker suffered severe facial injuries when a tire exploded, and
- This video shows an exploding tire instantly killing a garage worker.
