Company owner jailed — no workers’ comp insurance

What’s the penalty for not having workers’ comp insurance? In some cases, like this one, it’s jail.

A Williston, VT, home improvement contractor is serving 30 days in jail for violating the state’s workers’ comp laws.

Donald Bevins pleaded guilty to two counts of failure to maintain workers’ comp insurance. He operated under both Twin City Roofing and Around the Clock Property Maintenance.

A judge sentenced Bevins to one to two years in jail, all suspended except for 30 days. The owner had to report to jail immediately. He’s also prohibited from operating or working for a home repair business.

During the time he didn’t have insurance, two of Bevins’ employees were seriously injured while working.

After he’s out of jail, a restitution hearing will determine how much Bevins will pay his former employees in connection with their injuries.
